Musical Fidelity M8xTT

Musical Fidelity M8xTT

Musical Fidelity pays tribute to a legend. The M8x TT picks up where the M1 left off in 2004 – with some major updates.

In 2002 Antony Michaelson asked Heinz Lichtenegger to help with a design of an abso- lute high-end turntable which should match the massive me- chanical design of the Musical Fidelity amplifiers. The base idea was to combine metal with zero resonating acrylic.

The Musical Fidelity M1 was born and a great success. Now we are happy to intro- duce its successor – the M8xTT. The new M8xTT is following the same design philosophies with new features and up- grades. The 10-inch tonearm is a completely new design with a transparent acrylic bearing ring and conical aluminium tonearm tube. On the back you can find phono RCA outputs, as well as balanced XLR sockets.

The motor is sitting in on a special foam inthe lower level acrylic plinth to decoupleit from the platter and the tonearm. Theelectronic speed control allows you toswitch between 33 & 45 RPM.A silicon belt connects the motor andthe two floor TPE damped platter, whichis made of aluminium with additionalinserts to improve the flywheel effect.

Four heavyweight TPE damped aluminiumfeet with magnetic support connect thetwo acrylic plinths with teflon spacers inbetween. You can adjust them in height by turningthe riffled middle part of the feet to levelthe turntable.

Bowers & Wilkins: new 600 Series

Bowers & Wilkins: new 600 Series

A few months after presenting two very high-end models as part of the 800 Signature series, English manufacturer Bowers & Wilkins shows its continued interest in the entry-level with the renewal of the 600 series, now called S3, like last year’s updated 700 series, from which the new models borrow certain components.

Proof of the change in consumption in this price range, the British company is now presenting just four models, including a single floorstanding speaker numbered 603 S3, and a HTM6 S3 center speaker. Easier to integrate into a room, the other two models are compacts, designated 606 S3 and 607 S3, with the Sussex-based brand declining to say whether or not it intends to expand the range in the future.

Among the benchmark elements of this new range, first and foremost stands out the 25mm (1″) Titanium Dome™ tweeter, whose optimized grille taken directly from the 800 Signature models improves diffraction and makes listening more immersive. Midrange/bass continues to be handled by a patented Continuum™ cone FST™ aramid fiber driver, while the binding posts and rear port come directly from the 700 S3 series. To develop the bass, the 603 S3 adds two 165mm (6.5”) paper-cone boomers, which take the low end up to 46Hz (measured at ±3dB) for a sensitivity of 90 dB at 8-ohm impedance.
The larger of the two compacts, the 606 S3 offers a frequency response of 52Hz to 28kHz (±3dB) for a sensitivity of 88dB, its midrange driver measuring 165mm (6.5”), compared with 150 (6”) on the 603 S3 and 130mm (5”) on the 607 S3. At 30cm (11.8”) tall, the latter is 4cm shorter than the 606 S3, which measures 34cm (13.6”). The HTM6 S3 features two 130mm (5″) mid/bass drivers placed horizontally around the tweeter.

Launched in Europe at prices of €2,300, €1,000, €800 and €750 respectively, the 603 S3, 606 S3, 607 S3 and HTM6 S3 are all very competitively priced, particularly with a view to pairing them in sets of five or more for home theater use.

Focal Trio6

Focal Trio6

A new addition to the Focal ST6 range, which technologically surpasses the SM6 range, the new Trio6 joins the recently renewed Solo6 and Twin6, further enhancing the musical performance of a now world-renowned monitor loudspeaker.

A three-way active loudspeaker designed above all for professionals and studios, the Trio6 offers musicality well up to the level of high-end hi-fi speakers, and has the advantage of great modularity, notably in the possibility of cutting out the 8″ woofer to make a two-way system, or even leaving the 5″ midrange alone, which can then go up to 15kHz and down to around 600Hz. The subwoofer uses proprietary ultra-low distortion “W” diaphragm technology, an acronym for “Glass/Verre”, which consists of a composite fiberglass sandwich structure. The midrange driver uses the same material, combined with TMD (Tuned Mass Damper) technology to reduce interference effects between 1kHz and 3kHz, while the treble is handled by an IAL (Infinite Acoustic Loading) beryllium tweeter with inverted dome, incorporated in a new formwork relief, with the aims of considerably improving diffraction, notably to avoid directivity and loss effects in multichannel (5. 1) or Dolby Atmos® (7.1.2, 9.1.4, etc.) applications.

Integrated into a new cabinet, with a completely revised internal design and a new laminar port, the Trio6 offers an extended frequency range from 35Hz to 40kHz, i.e. values close at the bottom and higher at the top to what the human ear is capable of hearing. In studio use, this loudspeaker is highly functional, with a high-pass filter, an LMF filter and automatic standby, in addition to the above-mentioned possibilities for muting certain loudspeakers, with the aim of adapting mixes to all types of end-user listening systems. Entirely manufactured in France, this new reference arrives in Europe at a price of €2,999 each.
